There are many states without explicit non-discrimination protections for the LGBTQ community with regard to housing, health care, and/or access to public spaces – at the state and/or federal levels.
In order to help right this wrong, The Center for LGBTQ and Gender Studies in Religion and Inclusive Justice of Michigan offer this training for anyone interested in learning how to build and sharpen their skills in engaging with our elected officials on advocating for non-discrimination policies and protections.

Rev. Dr. Roland Stringfellow is Coordinator of the CLGS African American Roundtable and Pastor of MCC Detroit, Michigan. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Education and a Master of Science degree in Counseling from Indiana University. He later earned a Master of Arts degree in Ministry from Grace Theological Seminary and in 1990 became a licensed minister in the Baptist Church.
In 2005 Roland was ordained with the Metropolitan Community Church and in 2006 he earned his Master of Divinity from the Pacific School of Religion with a Certificate in Religion and Sexuality.
Roland is licensed with the United Church of Christ and The Fellowship churches, a predominately African-American denomination with an outreach to LGBT individuals. He has worked as a pastor in Indiana and California. In addition to his work within church contexts, Roland also worked in the field of education in a variety of capacities – teacher, guidance counselor, college advisor, and vice-principal. Roland is currently based in Detroit, Michigan.
Barbara Satin, Assistant Faith Work Director at the Human Rights Campaign (HRC), is a transgender activist involved with both local and national gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and queer communities and organizations. In her role as Assistant Faith Work Director for The Task Force, Barbara works on a variety of social justice issues that have a faith component, including assisting faith settings in welcoming and affirming transgender persons; providing leadership training opportunities for trans religious leaders; educating people and faith settings around the needs of LGBTQ individuals as they age; helping bring both a faith and LGBTQ perspective to issues such as immigration, asylum and employment.
Besides serving on a number of local GLBT boards, Barbara is a founder of GLBT Generations, a group that has worked to educate people about the needs of LGBT persons as they grow old. She is also a member of Living Table (formerly Spirit of the Lakes) United Church of Christ in Minneapolis, and was instrumental in helping develop a 46 unit affordable rental facility, Spirit on Lake, which opened in Minneapolis in 2013 and is providing safe and respectful housing for LGBT seniors.
Nationally, Barbara has served on the Executive Council of the United Church of Christ, the first transgender woman to have a national leadership role in that denomination. She has also been an adviser to the Civil Marriage Collaborative and has worked on LGBT aging issues with a variety of national senior organizations.
