Rev. Irene Monroe

African American Roundtable Coordinator

A native of Brooklyn, New York, Rev. Irene Monroe is a graduate of Wellesley College and Union Theological Seminary, and served as a pastor at an African-American church before studying for her doctorate at Harvard Divinity School. As a syndicated queer religion columinist, her work appear across the country. She writes “The Religion Thang,” for In Newsweekly, now called New England Blade, the largest LGBT newspaper in New England, “Faith Matters” for The Advocate Magazine, The Bilerico Project, and Black Commentator. Her writings also appear on the Huffington Post, in the Boston Globe, the Boston Herald, the Bay State Banner, Cambridge Chronicle, and Metro News. She has been profiled in O, Oprah Magazine, and CNN's Paula Zahn Now. She appears in the recent documentary film, “For the bible Tells me so,” and her coming out story is profiled in “CRISIS: 40 Stories Revealing the Personal, Social, and Religious Pain and Trauma of Growing up Gay in America,” released in September 2008. Rev. Monroe sits on the advisory board of several national LGBTQ organizations.
