Religious Leaders Press Conference
Bay Area Religious Leaders are planning to meet in front of Grace Cathedral at 2:00pm on the day the US Supreme Court announces their decision on Proposition 8 and the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA).
Location: Grace Cathedral (Main Steps), 1100 California Street, San Francisco, CA
Time: 2:00 pm
Date: Today, June 26, 2013
Many people cite religious convictions as the main reason for their opposition to marriage equality. Bay Area Religious Leaders who support marriage equality will gather on the steps of Grace Cathedral for a press conference to express support for lesbian and gay couples and their families to be treated fairly. There are many houses of worship that are open and welcoming to LGBTQ people and, as our society become more inclusive, these leaders want to help frame these changes within a religious context so that members of our community will understand that the love and commitment expressed by lesbian and gay couples is compatible with the teachings of our various religious traditions.
Many of the religious leaders will be present (in clerical garb) during the rally in the Castro later that evening to bless couples, individuals and families. When Proposition 8 has been overturned many welcoming congregations will want support couples looking for houses of worship to host their wedding ceremonies.
Join the Coalition of Welcoming Congregations, OASIS California and other partner organizations at Grace Cathedral at 2:00 pm for a 30-minute press conference.
