Putting Faith into Action: Training for Marriage Equality
CLGS is pleased to be working California Faith for Equality (CFE) as we seek to take back our faith communities and our religious language for the sake of LGBTQ social justice.
CFE is a unique statewide network of over 6000 clergy, lay leaders, and congregations from diverse faith traditions, and CLGS has been working closely with them to secure marriage equality for all.
CFE is now launching a cutting-edge organizing training designed for clergy and lay leaders from congregations and organizations across the state, equipping and maximizing their capacity to work effectively at the intersection of LGBT equality and religion.
The training, "Putting Faith into Action: Marriage Equality One Month at a Time," jointly developed by California Faith for Equality, the Institute for Judaism and Sexual Orientation at Hebrew Union College-JIR, and the Human Rights Campaign Foundation, provides resources and training for faith leaders to:
- Integrate LGBT equality into their regular congregational life and celebrations;
- Reach undecided members of their faith communities with a message of justice for LGBT people;
- Mobilize their members toward winning LGBT legal rights.
Participants will be ready to put faith into action with a completed plan as this training:
- Offers concrete examples of how clergy, faith leaders and congregations can make use of organizing methods that will make marriage equality and LGBT equality a routine and evolving part of the entire congregation’s ministry;
- Helps faith leaders develop a specific plan suited for the unique cultural, theological, political makeup and mission of their given congregation or community;
- Lays the groundwork for participants to articulate their call to this work and their congregation’s call;
- Offers extensive resources and exercises on how to assess what motivates a congregation, what may hold a leader or congregation back, and on how to engage leaders in the work;
- Provides a justification for why we need to do this work in progressive congregations and for the importance of advocating for civil marriage equality.
