CLGS Responds

BERKELEY, CA - On August 11 at its Churchwide Assembly, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) made a historic change by advising its bishops to refrain from disciplining ministers in committed same-sex relationships. The following is a statement from Rev. Dr. Jay Emerson Johnson, acting executive director of the Center for Lesbian and Gay Studies in Religion and Ministry at Pacific School of Religion.

"The Center for Lesbian and Gay Studies in Religion and Ministry (CLGS) applauds the Churchwide Assembly of the ELCA for this vote, which clears the way for the denomination to make a full affirmation of the dignity and sanctity of same-sex relationships. We pray that the 2009 Assembly will complete this groundbreaking act of justice by eliminating all barriers to the ordination of men and women in committed same-sex relationships. In so many churches, clergy are forced to choose between their religious vocations and living openly and honestly with their partners. This vote represents a significant step forward for the ELCA and the Christian church as a whole, and offers hope to other denominations struggling for inclusion of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people. CLGS will continue to provide the scholarship and education necessary to change hearts and minds on this vital issue."
