Souls 'a Fire!
National Conference of the African American Roundtable Project
April 10-12, 2003
In April of 2003, the African American Roundtable Project of the Center for Lesbian and Gay Studies in Religion and Ministry presented "Souls 'a Fire!", the first national conference to bring together African American lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender religious leaders and scholars to explore issues at the intersection of race, sexuality, and religion.
Featuring lectures, panel discussions, academic papers, and worship, this three-day event was held at Pacific School of Religion in Berkeley and Taylor United Methodist Church in Oakland.
"Souls 'a Fire" was the first national conference to engage African American gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender religious scholars and leaders on issues of religion and sexuality.
Conference leaders came from a wide variety of backgrounds and faith traditions, creating a richness and broad context for discussion. They examined issues of sexuality and religion in academic scholarship, pastoral care, community leadership, HIV/AIDS, and other areas of concern for African American churches.
